Introduced in 2009, the Youngcare At Home Care Grants (AHCG) assist young people (aged 18-65) with high care needs who are living at home and who are at risk of entering aged care facilities.

The Youngcare AHCG aims to enhance the standard of living for young people with high care needs and their carers, and prevent further admissions of young people into aged care facilities.

The program provides one-off grants between $2,000 and $10,000 for the provision of essential support items such as hoists, wheelchairs, emergency respite care and renovations to make homes disability friendly.

Details:

  • Applications open on Monday 26 August 2013.
  • Applications close on Friday 25 October 2013.
  • Applicants will be notified by Friday 13 December 2013.
  • $300,000 has been made available for this round of grants.

Examples of previously successful applicants include:

Andrew suffers from cerebral palsy and is unable to communicate independently. He relies on his support network to interpret his needs and make decisions on his behalf. As a successful applicant of the Youngcare At Home Care Grants program, Andrew has been able to purchase a speech generating device, allowing him to express his wants and needs regarding his lifestyle choices, comfort, support and care.

Michael is 42 and lives at home with his parents as his carers. Michael has acute physical and intellectual disabilities as a result of a severe brain injury as a child. Michael's home has a pool but he is unable to transfer from his wheelchair to the pool. Once a week he travels to the local hydrotherapy pool as swimming is an important activitiy for both his physical and mental health. Through the At Home Care Grants program, Michael's family was able to purchase a pool hoist so he can not only undertake his vital physiotherapy, but also be able to swim with his family and friends when he chooses to.
